People.....People who need.......people

Yo.

This semester, I'm taking a class on Preventive Counseling. You know, the insane concept that we need to intervene BEFORE people get abused, abuse, get crazy, depressed, whatever, and do things to prevent the problem from happening in the first place. This concept is nothing new, but it is such a struggle to convince everyone that prevention is the REAL solution to the real issues. Anywho.....tangent!

The chapter I read last week is called "Everyday Prevention" and is was so good that I wanted to share a few tid-bits with you!! Here's one....I have more stuff later!

Socrates' Seven Principles for "The Good Life"

1. Know thyself.
2. Ask Great questions.
3. Think for yourself.
4. Challenge conventional wisdom.
5. GROW WITH FRIENDS.
6. Speak the truth.
7. Strengthen your soul.

I want to concentrate on #5, obviously, "grow with friends". You know, I think that, as Americans, we value individualism and autonomy to the point that real, genuine, soulful friendships and relationships take a back seat. Do you get together with your friends and family regularly, either to conversate (like I love to do), or just to goof off? Are there people out there who you depend on, not in the "I'm so needy" sort of way, but that mutual dependence that comes from being loved and, more importantly, loving them? Do you really KNOW your friends and family, or are they just acquaintances that you have a good time with or have a strong connection to? Think about it.

If you find yourself concerned, not to worry. Don't get riled up and have an existential crisis. Start by doing something small, like picking up the phone and calling a good friend, just to get together for coffee or talk on the phone for a little while about their day. Maybe you're busy and all you can do is email - than just do that.

More on "The Good Life" soon!
