On My First Swim Lesson

Height: 5' 7"
Eyes: Green
Weight: 141 lbs.
Body Fat Index: Will get back to you. Somewhere around 25% (too high at this point)
Rump circumfrence: No comment.

Today was my first day of swimming lessons and, therefore, my first day of triathlon training. I was anxious to get started so I miraculously work up on time at 5:15am to get to the gym. I forgot my towel, but otherwise things went pretty smoothly. The only real challenge was prancing (walking sheepishly is more descriptive) around in a bathing suit without a cutsie little swim skirt.

Lorin, my swim coach, is the husband of a work colleague of mine (another reason why I love working at the U - so many connections), so he has known me for several years. He also knows that I'm training for a triathlon so he has that in mind as he is teaching me and working with me. Basically the first thing I figured out is that it has been a LONG time since I've really swam. I was a mess! I was scared to put my head under water and my form was gross. Thankfully, Lorin was very patient and worked with me on doing two to three different drills to help me with form and we had a "it's ok to snort water once in awhile - you'll live" chat.

Overall, it went great! I walked out of my first lesson refreshed and ready for more. I love the 15 minute commute to work and the cool breeze and sun rising as I come out of the gym. My ultimate plan is to start having my quiet times outside before work. Fab!

On Becoming an Athlete

This morning, I signed up to do my first-ever triathlon in Houston. Appropriately titled "Ironbabes", its an all-women's event, which is quite good because I feel pretty apprehensive about busting out in a bathing suit on May 11th.

So, now starts two months of training, involving swimming classes every morning from 6-7:15 (are people even awake at that time? seriously?), weekend jogs/runs, and some leisurely biking at the rec center (biking in place allows me to read short stories, which I am so fond of). In general, I have avoided competitive sports for quite awhile, but don't really know why (maybe because there's a certain cognitive dissonance that I sense when I feel ultra competitive [I don't like that "cut-throat" feeling], maybe it's because I'm afraid of not finishing or failure....who knows.) Anyway, I'm doing it.

If anyone is interested in weekend training, let me know. I'm pretty pumped! Of course, I'll be tracking my progress, so I'm looking forward to asking my roommate to measure the circumference (sp?) of my behind this weekend in the buff. hehehehehehehehehe

A Confession

Hi -

Yesterday, I was feeling fiesty and cooked a delicious dinner: Tilapia with almonds and greek seasoning, asparagus, and rice. Tonight I got home from work, excited about the leftovers. To add some zest to my pallet (sp?), I decided to eat the seaweed salad I had been saving in the fridge for a few days. As I tried to pop open the plastic top, the package jolted open and the entire glob of my precious seaweed salad fell on the kitchen floor.

I took a fork, squated onto the floor, and carefully picked at the seaweed salad, figuring that as long as I confiscated everything that had not touched the floor, it would be fine. So I did, and I ate it, and it tasted good.

Yep.

Here I Am

Hey.

I just need to let you know that I'm 30 years old now.

Sometimes I'm ok with it.
Sometimes I'm excited.
Sometimes I feel really terrified and cry myself to sleep.

And there you have it.

Here I Am.

Are you a Bu that's been CBC'd?

Happy New Year!

So, in the past we have discussed pseudo-dating, weird hugs, and numerous other ambiguous situations that now have rather hilarious names. Here's one more: CHRISTIAN BOOTY CALL, or CBC for short.

If you're in the 20's and 30-something Christian dating scene (which would require a whole 'nuther blog to unpack, but I'll let someone else do that), you've probably experienced a CBC. Here's a short list of people, things, and places needed to create a CBC:

1) A pseudo-dater (see 2006 blog for full details)
2) A bu (pronounced "boo"): A bu is a "back-up" - and the object of the pseudo-dater's pseudo desires. Being a bu is a sad state to be sure - it means that you're probably a great girl (or guy) who meets a lot of the pd'er's specs, but for whatever reason they just want to be your here-and-now friend with no strings attached. Ironically, however, even though they aren't truly interested in you, there's not a chance in he** they'd ever set you up with their friends, as much as they think of both you and them, and may even feel threatened by that possibility. In short, the pd'er doesn't want the bu, but doesn't want anyone else to have them, resulting in hurt feelings and confusion (eventually). If that's your lot, you're a bu.
3) A telephone or computer.
4) Spontaneity
5) An enticing, exciting, yet casual reason to hang out.

Ok, now that we have all of the ingredients, determining what a CBC is is easy. A CBC happens when a pseudo-dater calls a bu on the fly to go do something random and fun together at a moment's notice. The bu, who may or may not know in their heart that they are a bu, continues to hope that hanging out with the pd'er on yet another adventure will put the pd'er over the edge, causing them to realize that the bu is really the "it" girl (or guy). The bu thinks "Just one more time!", and their feelings for the pd'er spring into action. Against their better judgment, their desire to spend time with the pd'er wins out. Maybe they've tried to draw some pd boundaries, but to know avail - a lot of rationalizing goes on. It is no wonder that most pd'ing relationships die such a slow and confusing death.

Examples of CBC's:

1) "Come on _____ random road trip with me."
2) "I'm meeting some friends at ____ jazz club in 15 minutes. Wanna come?"
3) "What are you doing right this second? I need help picking out new hinges for my cabinets."
4) "You're the only person on this planet that I can think of that can screw in a light bulb. I know it's 10:30, but I'm afraid of the dark. Will you come over and help me?"
5) "My brother's in town today. Want to have lunch with us?"
6) "Let's go to a movie with my parents. They'd love to meet you."
7) "I have a craving for Waffle House. Let's go right now and stay up too late. Then we'll go back to one of our places very sleepy, and I'll put my head on your shoulder, snuggle, and lead you on. Won't that be fun??"
8) "I need someone to be vulnerable with. Can I pop in and confide in you about all my deep, heart-felt secrets? I can only stay for a little while though. I've got a date with another emotionally confused bu. See you in 10."

Finally, here's an excerpt from an email exchange about CBC with a friend:

I don't know _____, and she is not here to defend herself, so I hesitate to give my opinion. However, I have to state the obvious - if (key word) she knows that you liked her and she is still calling you (can you say "Christian Booty Call"?) to stay out late and hang out with her like that, she is not looking out for your best interests as a friend in Christ. If she has no idea that you liked her and she's doing this, she's blind to the obvious (or wants to be) and just enjoys frolicking around with you. That might not be so bad, but neither of these options are beneficial to YOUR heart - no matter about hers. Honestly, this whole situation is giving me a "single for a reason" vibe, and that vibe is not about you.
I know this is unsolicited advice, but some boundaries are in order here. Just say "no". Having been the girl on both sides of this situation, I can tell you confidently that there will never be a winner in this game.

Dang.

This is Plan A.

This is not Plan B. My life, I mean. Just thought I'd let everybody know. God's plan is definitely in action.

What's the point?

I'm in trouble - its 11:11 and I'm just starting a blog. However, I feel like writing.

Right now, in my community group at church, we are studying justification, sanctification, and glorification - our salvation, maturation, and so forth as Christians. It's very interesting - I still struggle with such elementary related concepts.

But here's one that I really ponder - an age-old question that I can't seem to shake. What's the point? God created us and is omnipotent - he knows everything. He knew that man would fall sinful, etc. etc. As a loving God, he is grieved by our actions and we need a savior (insert many deep theological concepts). Believers are predestined, according to scripture, although many people are not, but on the other hand God desires all to come to know him. Clearly so many things over my head that I just can't seem to wrap my mind around. This list goes on.

But even before all of these theological nuggets, I have to be vulnerable and ask: what's the point? Why create humans, or even this world, in the first place? Why are we here in this world? I'm not talking about purpose driven life stuff either - I'm thinking higher than that, if that's possible. Does this make sense?
