Things have been coasting along in H-Town. Yesterday, I took off a tad early, jumped in my car, and drove down to Lake Jackson to meet my dad. After an ice cream cone at chic-fil-a, we changed into our bathing suits and headed towards the coast. With Hurricane Emily around, the waves were high, and you know what that means ---- cowabunga!
After buying some boogie boards at the local surf shop, Dad and I cruised into Surfside and spent an hour and a half playing in the warm gulf waters, tickled by our spontaneous "after work" fun. These are the kinds of moments that I will always treasure, and never get enough of. Even as an adult, I can go and have fun with my dad, just as if I were eight years old. One of my favorite photographs from childhood is a picture of my dad and me out in the ocean; he throwing me up into the air, me with a big smile on my face. For just a little while, I got to relive that.
Being at the beach seems to always trigger lots of thoughts of God too. It's beautiful and scary, calm and violent. I remember how it felt to have my quiet time on the beach in Destin and wherever else during my college years, and really sit and think about God's creation and who he is. It hit me as I was out in the water that the only real way for me to be at peace with life is to truly be with God and walk with him daily. It's not about finding the perfect church or perfect friends or perfect actions - it's just about trusting him with my life. Seems like a small lesson, but I'm very stubborn and feel like I've "re-learned" that more times than I can count.
After watersports, Dad and I went to Willie Joe's for dinner. Good food and good conversation, although I had to get over my initial embarrassment of my dad not wearing any shoes. :P No big deal - I really love him.
More tales later, after I get back from Baltimore to visit Dr. Dave and Shelly Neese. :)
